Your water is not bad. It is just carrying dissolved rock, and that mineral load costs you money quietly for years before you ever notice it.
Hardness is caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium that water picks up as it moves through soil and stone. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies water hardness in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate: 0 to 60 is soft, 61 to 120 is moderately hard, 121 to 180 is hard, and anything above 180 is very hard. Where your home lands on that scale decides whether a softener is a nice upgrade or a repair you should have made three water heaters ago.

The city maintains 10 water wells that feed the water grid and 8 water towers that hold pressure across town, and because a public utility has to operate under federal drinking water regulation, that water is tested on a regular schedule. Groundwater in this part of the Ozarks moves through limestone and dolomite, and those two rocks are calcium carbonate and calcium magnesium carbonate. Water sitting in and moving through carbonate rock picks up exactly the minerals that make water hard.
That is different from Springfield, which draws most of its supply from surface water. McDaniel Lake feeds the Fulbright Water Treatment Plant, Fellows Lake feeds the Blackman Water Treatment Plant, and the James River is pumped to Blackman when flows are high enough. Different source, different water, different treatment plants, different result at the tap.
