A mini split is a heat pump in two pieces. An outdoor unit holds the compressor and condenser, an indoor unit mounts on the wall or ceiling in the room it serves, and a line set runs between them carrying refrigerant, power and condensate through a three-inch hole in the wall.
No ductwork. That is the whole point. A central air conditioner loses a serious share of its output through duct leakage before the air ever reaches a room, and a ductless system skips that entirely, which is most of where its energy efficiency comes from. Each indoor unit has its own thermostat, so rooms nobody is using are not being conditioned.
One outdoor unit can run several indoor units, or a single-zone system can solve one problem room on its own.
Additions and bonus rooms, where extending the existing ductwork means opening walls and the central system was never sized to cover the extra space anyway.
Garages, shops and workspaces, especially where the alternative is a window air conditioner and a space heater fighting each other.
Converted attics and basements, which are almost always the worst room in the house on the existing system.
Older homes with no ducts at all, where a mini split heat pump gives both heating and cooling without the disruption of retrofitting duct runs into a house that never had them.
The one room nobody can agree on. A single indoor unit costs far less than resizing the whole system to fix one bedroom.
Installing a mini split is more exacting than it looks, which is why the results vary so much between installers.
Sizing comes first, and getting it wrong is the most common failure. Oversized units short cycle, never pull humidity out, and leave a room that is cold and clammy. The calculation depends on the room, its insulation, its glazing and its orientation, not on square footage from a chart.
Then placement of both the indoor and outdoor units, which decides airflow across the room and how long the line set has to be. Then the line set itself, flared and connected without contaminating it. Then the electrical connections, which usually means a dedicated circuit.
Then the part that separates a system lasting fifteen years from one failing in three: pulling a deep vacuum on the lines with a vacuum pump before releasing the refrigerant. Moisture and air left in the line set destroy the compressor slowly and the failure arrives long after the installer has gone. Any DIY mini split kit that tells you to skip this step is telling you why it was cheap.
Finally the condensate route, which has to drain by gravity to somewhere sensible, and a commissioning check that the charge and airflow are actually right.
If the house already has good ductwork and the whole place needs conditioning, a central system is usually the cheaper route per square foot, and worth comparing against a conventional air conditioner installation.
If the problem is specific rooms, if there are no ducts, or if the ducts are in poor condition, ductless wins on cost and on result. It is also worth knowing that a mini split is a heat pump, so it heats as well as cools and can take load off the main system. The same considerations that apply to any heat pump repair and service apply here once it is running.
Where the ductwork is the actual problem, fixing that may be the better spend. Duct cleaning and inspection will tell you whether the runs are restricted or disconnected before you buy equipment to work around them.
